Folk Art Painting "Spirit of Christmas Planting Frost"

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Title:  "Spirit of Christmas Planting Frost"

Size: 5" x 7" (5 inches by 7 inches)

Medium:  Acrylic paints on acid free Smooth Bristol.

Date:  11/21/07

Notes:  The light line seen going down through the painting, at the edge of the moon and over the spirit's cloak is NOT on the painting itself.  It is a reflection caused by my scanner.

As a child, I was convinced that the frost that grew on my window must have been painted on by some Holiday Spirit because I thought it was too beautiful to be there by chance.  The crystals of ice grew over night and created caves and forests for my fairies to play in.  My imagination was truely captured by the frost that was planted while I slept.  Now that I've grown and know the difference, I still like to imagine the special spirit that I was sure must exist.  I imagine a Christmas Spirit staying busy through the night to enchant my children as they wake in the morning.  She works dilligently under the light of the full moon, who watches over this great work.  Perhaps she is Jack Frost's sister or some angel who's duty it is to instill a love for the holidays.  Maybe she is one of Santa's Little Helpers.  Whatever this spirit may be, I hope she brings you joy this Holiday Season!

I've painted this piece in a simple folk style to capture the "feeling" of Christmas.  The deep blue background shows the happy strokes of my brush, dashing this way and that, with the abandonment of child like joy.  The face in the moon looks on, as if inspecting the spirit's work.  Please click the thumnail for a close up of the moon's face!  There is some texture to the fur on the collar of the spirtit's Holiday garb and the fur puff at the end of her red cap, that may be seen better if you click the thumnails.  A white snowflace hovers near her face, waiting for her command.  She has just planted this curl of frost and is intent on her purpose, ignoring the wind that catches her cloak and makes it flutter behind her.  A lovely addition to any holiday collection!  This painting will be wrapped in acid free paper, placed between rigid clean cardboard and shipped in a bubble mailer for protection during shipping.

Here's another set of Winter Holiday Gift Tags that feature silver snow flakes.  This set has shimmery blue organza ribbon for the tag strings and will dress up any holiday package!  Your friends and family will love these pretty tags!  I have not signed them, so if you want to let your gift recipient assume that you made them, it will be our little secret...  ;)  I can sign them upon request.  The background is watercolor on acid free Arches watercolor paper, with metalic silver Prismacolor ink for the snow flakes.  These are so pretty that your friends will want to keep them long after they forgot what you got them for Christmas.  They also make lovely ornaments for the tree or to hang from a car rear view mirror.  Click the thumnails to see them from different angles.

Handmade Silver Snow Flake Holiday Gift Tags

Here are a couple holiday gift tags that I've made.  Both have a blue watercolor background with metalic silver Prismacolor ink snow flakes on the front.  The backs are blank so that you may write a personalized message.  These are the kinds of tags your friends will keep long after they forgot what you gave them.  LOL  They are pretty enough that they make excellent ornaments for the Christmas tree or even hanging from a rear view mirror in the car!  The fiber for the tag string is VERY soft and shiny!  I love the feel of it!  Although these tags are for the holidays, they aren't distintively "Christmas" so they can be used for any winter holiday, including a winter birthday.  Click the thumbnails to see the tags from different angles.

W.I.P. Autumn Gourds Oil Pastel- Part Four

This is part four of my Autumn Gourds Oil pastel demonstration.

Here I've filled in the mulch some more and added a bit more detail for a few spots on the work.

Some dark strokes in the mulch start defining the shadows below the gourds.

I've desided to add a rock border behind the gourds.  This will be the mid level of the work and come before the background.  I know the shadow of the rock will be dark, so I'd added some black right away.  A bit of light blue and purple are added to the lighter portion of the rocks.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I've used gray and white over the top of the base colors to give a "rock" look to it.  The blue and purple blend in well and add just a bit of color. Much of this picture is still in it's rough form.  Quite a bit of smoothing and some layering will refine the work.

W.I.P. Autumn Gourds Oil Pastel- Part Three

This entry is part three of my Autumn Gourds Oil Pastel demonstration.

In this frame, I continue to build on the color.  I've left the stem blank for now.  I don't want to smear the stem into the gourd or vise-versa.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

More color and value building!  The stem goes in as well.  I've also scuffed the shadow a bit with a textured cloth to lift up some of the dark color and give it a bit of texture.  This also helps smooth out areas that look too grainy.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Time to start on the background!  The gourds have not been refined, but that isn't important at this point.  The finishing details will be left for last.  Now it's time to deside how this background will play out.  I begin with the red mulch.  I use a bright red as my base color and scribble some in at somewhat random angles.  There's no uniform shape to the mulch, so this can be done quickly.

In this frame, I add a bright purple to the mulch.  It looks completely unnatural at this point, but this purple will help give a cool tone to the shadows.

W.I.P. Autumn Gourds Oil Pastel- Part Two

This is part two of my Autumn Gourds oil pastel demonstration.

In this frame, I've added another gourd to the foreground and have begun giving it a bit of depth.

A stem and darker values are added to the new gourd.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

At this point, I feel the work needs a taller gourd to help ballance out the large shape of the pumpkin squashed shape of the third gourd.  I sketch the rough outline.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here, I lay in the undercolor of the new gourd.  Where I want the shadows to show, I fill the color in thicker.  The lighter areas of the gourd have been lightly colored with the same tone.  This will help the transition from light to dark look more natural and blended.  You can see I've also started adding brighter colors to lighter portion.

W.I.P. Oil Pastel Autumn Gourds- the first steps

Here's an oil pastel on acid free Bristol that I've been working on the last few days.  I like gourds a lot.  I enjoy their shapes and colors, especially when I've got them displayed in my garden.  The red mulch and colorful leaves make an excellent backdrop for them!  Although this isn't an exact rendition of my garden or the gourds in it, this peice was inspired by them.  These are the first steps:

First, I taped down the edges of my smooth Bristol to my favorite "board".  Mine happens to be a hard plastic and is perfect for smaller works.  The hard plastic is easy to clean and won't dent under drawing pressure.  I've used wooden boards in the past at times, but all it takes is a single pressure mark in the wood to cause problems with future works.  I like to keep the peice as hands-free as possible.  When working with oil pastels, it's easy to accidentally smear your paper with an unwanted color.  Taping helps avoid the majority of preventable mishaps and helps keep finger oils and acids off your acid free paper.  Just be sure to chose one that won't discolor your edges or tear your painting once it's finished.

I had a general idea of how I wanted to start this one, but wanted to let it develop as I went along.  Some of my best works have grown out of a little idea.  I like to think of it as "free drawing", starting with a creative seed and just letting the picture come alive.  Each little piece inspires the next until the completed work develops.

I wanted to start with a small, pear shaped gourd in front of a pumpkin that's just starting to ripen from green to orange.  I sketched in the small gourd as my starting point because I planned on it being the foremost object in this still life.  Then came the general outline of the pumpkin & it's stem.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I like to lay in my base colors and layer them as I go.  In order to create a gentle transition of color from the changing pumpkin, I have the green side changing to orange with the orange on the outside of the paper.  The green will face other gourds in shades of green.  Although a contrast of orange behind the green of the small gourd would be interesting, I didn't feel it fit the mood I want to convey.  I want the overall arangement to be the final focus, not the small and off center gourd.  A sharp contrast would have certainly drawn the eye straight to the little gourd.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here I begin adding shadow and depth to the pumpkin.  With out the darker value adding depth, the appearance would look flat and the little gourd would blend right in the the pumpkin.

 The stem gets some color.

Hopeful Harvest Oil Pastel Demonstration by sunriseworkshop

Here's a YouTube video that I made to demonstrate how I create my landscapes in Oil Pastels.  "Hopeful Harvest" was inspired by Maine farmland in early Autumn.  This pastel painting on acid free Bristol measure 9" x 12" (9 inches by 12 inches).  A clear coating of acrylic sealer has been applied to prevent bloom and protect the beauty of this work.  This work will be sold to the first Reasonable offer made on it.  $5 is not a reasonable offer.  LOL

I will announce if it has been claimed, so you'll know if it's still available or not.

It's cold enough to snow here in Brownville, Maine!

Well, Summer is certainly over now!  The last of the leaves are barely hanging on to their trees and a pile of them has collected in front of the workshop door.  Each morning seems colder than the last and the frost is trying to claim everything in it's path.  The milkweed has erupted and thousands of seeds drift across my yard with each gust of wind.  Soon, we'll see the first snow.  Only 32 degrees today and the clouds have stamped out the blue sky.  A blanket of gray has settled all around.  I'm anxious to see that first snow.  To run out and catch the first flakes on the tip of my tounge!  Most of all, I look forward to the way the world lights up in the sunrise, the reflections bouncing off the bright whiteness and turning everything pink and orange.
