26 July Pink moth in a primrose flower.
LOL I found this moth just hanging out in a common primrose flower. The pink and yellow coloration is quite pretty and I'm sure it helps them hide in some flowers, just not this one. LOL If anyone knows what type of moth this is, let me know. I'm pretty sure it's a moth, not a butterfly, but it's color is surprising. :) 25 July Stopping to smell the flowers.
Sparky is getting bigger, but he still LOVES flowers and has to stop and smell them every chance he can get. I think some people could use a bit of that mind-set. I know too many who are so busy with life, they rarely stop to enjoy the simple things. So, I ask you all to take a few minutes to apreciate something or someone who you see all the time, yet barely notice. Today, I want to thank the lowely earthworm, who turns my veggie scraps into compost and loosens the soil so that my plant roots may thrive. :) I see them all the time, yet hardly think about how their work is part of my success as a gardener. :) Somebody killed my monster primrose. boo hoo sniffleYesterday, somebody killed the monster primrose in my front garden. :( I'm pretty sure I know who did it, and I'm pretty sure it was a teen impulse to ninja kick the plant because it was there and I'm not impressed. It was my "baby" and now it's dead. Hundreds of hummingbird and butterfly attracting flowers bit the dust in an instant. The worst part? Yesterday was my birthday. Not that my birthday matters much to me, because it doesn't, but it's just the thought that a random act of useless violence ruined the positive outlook I had on the day. Something will go wrong on my birthday and it has rained on my birthday for the last 17-20 years. Every year- like clockwork, there will be a storm. We were actually without power for a good part of the morning! LOL Happy birthday to me...
Here's my beautiful plant, day before yesterday, just starting to bloom.
All that remains is an oozing wound in the ground.
I've propped the major part of the stalk upside down at the base of the hillside in the hopes that a few seeds will mature from it and grow a new one away from the driveway, where this one was just too tempting. Moose highway? Near the Pleasant River, Brownville Junction, Maine.Took the kids for a little hike yesterday near the river. This whole area looks like a Moose Highway. The ground is really churned up and this section never seems to grow over. Gets packed down too much probably! I know they're around. LOL When they run through your yard and eat things out of the garden, it's not hard to believe there could be major moose transit trails close by. I'm sure the deer use it as well, but probably not nearly as much as the moose. The deer cut through and go to the river, but this is actually the size of a road. Lots of moose. LOL
![]() 24 July Brown-eyed / Black-eyed Susan - Pretty! I took this photo in the garden yesterday. :) The brown-eyed susans, or black-eyed susans depending on where you live, have popped up again and are in full bloom right now. They'll look beautiful all through the rest of the summer. :)
Can you spot the spider?
Can you spot the spider in this black & white photo that I took yesterday in the back garden? It was well hidden and blended right in. :) 22 July Good Morning from Maine! Show me your morning photo!
Show me your morning photo! Mine is of a Monarch butterfly on Common Milkweed in Brownville Junction, Maine. I've altered it using photoshop (Poster Edges Artistic Filter). :) 16 July Anyone know what this plant is?
Notice, some knob tossed a chair in the stream. We found all sorts of crud some joker tossed in. We just did a clean up in this area two weeks ago. Somebody went out of their way to do this. I swear, if I catch this idiot, they're getting reported. Someone needs a fine!!!!! It's actually probably several people doing it, but the fish won't last much longer if this keeps up. The kids and I always pick up the litter, but I think we're going to have to bring the van down to haul out all the junk that's been tossed in. Anyway, here's a close up of the flower. It grows near the water and is about the size of a medium shrub. I get excited when I find new plants. LOL Most importantly, is it poisonous?
Pretty, but I've no clue if it's toxic, so a piece of it doesn't come home with me. :( Cloud watching... What do you see?Something that I've always loved to do is look at the clouds. I could spend hours watching them float by, changing shape, becoming all sorts of wild things. This one was especially fun. :) I saw a whale at first, but the more you look at it, the more it looks like other things too. What do you see?
![]() Lilies sooooo pretty! The lilies at the town garden are beautiful right now! The sky made such a lovely backdrop, I took several pictures like this one. There are a couple older men that take care of the gardens. They've kept these deadheaded pretty well, but I noticed they'll have to make another pass soon.
I got some great shots for painting too! I haven't been painting much lately, because I'm out enjoying the good weather. Camera in hand, ready to capture every beautiful thing I see! :) 14 July Don't these mushrooms look like something from a fairytail illustration? The kids helped spot these mushrooms growing on our way to the store. They're really big and this group looks like it came right out of a fairytail illustration. I expect to see some fairy sitting on them, or a hooka smoking catterpillar, like in Alice in Wonderland.
![]() Pretty butterfly on clover- What kind is it?Went to the ball field the other day. Great little habitat beyond the fields! I checked on the sundew and found that someone has disturbed the area they live in and I couldn't find nearly as much of it as a couple weeks ago. I discovered the sundew several years ago and check on it each year to make sure it's coming back. Found a whole bunch of these beautiful butterflies in the wildflowers, though. I don't remember what the name of them is, and the last time I saw my field guide one of the kids had it. LOL It'll be lost for a while. So, if anyone knows what they are, please tell me!
I had a bunch in the gardens last year, but not this year. I did notice a couple wet butterflies drying out in the garden yesterday, though. Not the same kind as this, but at least there's more than I feared. :) 10 July LOL Sleepy PuppyAwe, how cute! Somebody's sleepy... LOL Saw him like this and couldn't help myself. Had to grab the camera!
![]() 08 July The common evening primrose is HUGE in the front garden. This monster of a plant (the very front bushy plant that looks like a whole bunch of plants) started from one tiny little seed that is practically the size of a pin head. It seems to be doing well here and has over 40 stalks shooting out from the center. It's several feet tall and will get taller. Could get to 6 feet and most of the stalks will have a LOT (over 30) blooms on it. A few will bloom at a time and they'll progress up the stalk. The hummingbirds love them and the seeds are a favorite of goldfinches! It's not blooming yet, but I'll get shots of it when it is. :)
![]() A big bee on the milkweed. This bee is much larger than the rest that have been buzzing around. Each day, something else is lured to my garden by the sweet scents drifting off the flowers. I was surprised at how large he was! Well, I don't actually know for sure that it was a male, but it was much larger than the little workers that I'm used to. This one may become a drawing at some point.
I LOVE bees! There's such an important part of life, yet too often we take them for granted. It seems that each year, I see less bees, less butterflies. I'm afraid that if we all don't do our part to save these little miracles, we'll regret it. Milkweed has so much to offer our flying friends and us as well. I'm sure the large leaves do a wonderful job of putting oxygen back into the air. This hardy variety grows up to 6 feet tall (at least in my yard, it does) and smells wonderful. Contact me if you'd like to reserve some seeds for this fall.
![]() Pretties in the GardenI don't remember what these ones are called, but they look so lovely right now!
![]() Milkweed looking pretty today! The milkweed is looking extra pretty today! Saw a few more butterflies than yesterday, still no Monarchs.
![]() The crown vetch is taking over! The crown vetch is worse this year than ever. It's a very pretty plant, but sooooooo invasive! It's trying to take over an entire section of the garden. Doesn't matter how much I pull or dig out, it just gets out of hand. It's great on the hillside because it's been good for preventing erosion, but it escaped into my domestic gardens. I think I'm going to end up moving the bulbs, rose bushes, alium, purple coneflower, primroses, and pansies. Then the whole thing is getting tilled and built up. I have plans for that back yard, but the bugs were miserable this year from the river flooding. I'll get the garden design all figured out, then work on it while it's cooler.
See what I mean? LOL
There's all sorts of stuff growing in that mess! 07 July The roses smell so good!Wow, the roses smell wonderful!!! They're in full bloom right now. :)
![]() 06 July The butterfly gardens are in bloom! The butterfly gardens are in bloom! The milkweed is amazing right now and the scent is HEAVENLY! One problem... I think this winter was hard on the Monarchs. And the swallowtails. So far, I've only noticed two types of butterflies. Last year there were over 10. I hope they'll find their way back to my gardens, soon!
